RECLAMATION

Vigo Coal Company is a proud steward of the land and—as testimony to this commitment—has received numerous reclamation awards at both the state and federal levels.

Vigo has won four Excellence in Mining Awards from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and has been honored with three awards from the US Department of the Interior Office of Surface Mining, including the Good Neighbor Award.  The Interstate Mining Compact Commission has recognized Vigo a fourth time for reclamation at its various mining operations.

At Vigo, reclamation is an integral part of the mining plan.  Soil handling is completed in the most cost-effective manner and soil replacement exceeds the minimums required by the DNR.  Whether post-mining land use is row crops or hay, pasture, wetlands or wildlife habitats, Vigo strives to meet requirements for quick release of reclamation bonds while bringing the properties back to the highest productive land use as soon as possible.
